A touch of blue

This week’s color for the challenge is electric blue, which looked a lot like aqua to me. One of my favorite colors, aqua suggests the opposite of ‘electric’ to me. Aqua is calm and deep, soothing and sensual. It’s a happy color, but tinged with sadness and thus perfect for a day of reflection before the July 4th festivities begin. Tomorrow I’ll fly my stars and stripes and celebrate, but for today, I’m allowing myself to feel just a little blue.

A home by the sea

Once while perusing the real estate section of the New York Times Online — my version of porn — I came across a listing for a tiny cottage right at the edge of the ocean. It was much cheaper than the other beach ‘cottages’ in the section. Putting aside the fact that I wouldn’t have even been able to afford the down payment, I fantasized about buying it and moving in, living there with just the bare essentials, spending my days in solitude, writing and watching the sea. This What Next cottage reminds me of that dream.

What I was wearing…

I don’t know if this happens to everyone, or just women, or just me, but certain outfits and/or items of clothing remain inextricably linked to memories of significant events. For example, there’s a particular black lacy item in my lingerie drawer that I no longer wear, and yet am unable to discard. I wore it one special day, and every time I see it, I have to catch my breath as memories of that day come flooding back. I remember the other things I wore that day too. And how I almost didn’t want to wash them because they’d picked up his scent: subtle cologne, and sea air and something indefinably him.

Olive — 52 Weeks of Color Challenge

Another Saturday, another color for the challenge. And another day to relax and reflect. Here I’m standing on my new patio which, for this week, happens to be located in a grove of olive trees, watching as the afternoon starts to lose its morning sparkle and gets ready to fade into the mysteries of dusk. Renewal

Whatever the weather, and whatever date it falls on, Easter has always seemed to me to be the official beginning of spring. I imagine pagan rituals that predate our Judeo-Christian era, where the great goddess welcomes the sun god and allows him to warm her winter-chilled flesh. The fields are tilled, the crust of earth turned over to reveal the soft, dark underneath which will embrace and nurture spring’s new seed. And there is rejoicing in the knowledge that another winter has passed, and we’ve survived. I don’t know anything about farming or crops, and I don’t know much about pagan rituals, but I do know something about renewal. And today, that’s what I celebrate. The end of a cold winter. The warmth of new sun. A world filled with possibilities.

Cherry Blossoms

There is something about cherry blossoms that lets us know that spring is here. And there is something about spring that makes us girls want to wear our prettiest, most feminine things. You can finally leave that heavy coat at home — or better yet, put it in storage for the next few months — and embrace soft sweet colors and flowers and delicate shoes. In my part of the world, spring doesn’t last that long. It seems that one day we’re welcoming the first buds, and the next we’re pulling out cut-offs and flip-flops and stepping out into a hot, hot summer. So, best to enjoy it while it’s here. Just like life.

Getting stuff done

Has life suddenly gotten a lot busier? Or is it just me? Seems my already lengthy to-do list has multiplied, and though it sometimes seems overwhelming there is a tremendous sense of satisfaction in being able to cross things off the list. Then, when I log in to SL, I can do so without that nagging feeling one has when one leaves a task undone. We all bitch and moan about having too much to do, but, think about it; isn’t that the sign of a life that’s full? And isn’t that preferable to one that’s empty? I think it is.

Among things I made time for in recent days was a shopping trip to Aoharu to check out the new releases. This fabulous jacket is one of them; it’s perfect for spring, and perfect to wear with jeans and flats when you’re absolutely determined to leap into the day and get stuff done!

The sweet sadness of Sunday afternoon

There’s a mood that starts to set it on a Sunday afternoon. You’re still out and about, you’re still enjoying the wonderful weekend, but that joy becomes tinged with sadness because you know it’ll be over soon, way too soon. This has been such a fabulous weekend I was worried that I wouldn’t have time to be in-world (or in-blog). But the lovely spring weather filled me with energy so, yes, here I am posting again.
