Exploring Liberty Cove

LibertyCove

It’s raining where I am, and though the flowers are happy I found myself in need of sunshine. A trip to Liberty Cove reminded me of things I love about SL: the beauty, the colors, the creativity.  Sextan Shepherd’s sim is truly a marvel with much to explore.

Lies in the dark

Doubt

I’m sick to death of hearing things from
uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics.
Just give me some truth…

~ John Lennon

I heard a particularly egregious, um, ‘story’ today, and it occurred to me to wonder whether people are more apt to lie in SL than in RL  First of all, you can’t use your usual lie-detectors — that is, your senses — to discern a lie; an avatar doesn’t display the usual ‘tells’ that a human might.  And because so much conversation takes place in IM, it’s quite possible for someone to tell one person one thing and at the same time be telling someone else something completely different.  Yep, I’ve seen it happen.  Further, there’s not a whole lot of accountability.  In RL, habitual liars generally get caught sooner or later and have to pay a price.  In-world, not so much; there are no credit checks or required references. Once found out, the liar can skip out on the old avatar and create a brand new self.  A little research confirms my thesis: that people do lie more online than in RL.

So, that last little bit of nasty gossip you heard?  While it could be tempting to spread it to your ten nearest and dearest friends, you might want to consider the possibility that it’s not true.  Take a few hours off from SL, watch Rashomon on Netflix, and allow yourself to feel a little doubt.  And a little compassion. After all, the person who spreads the lie is almost bad as the liar who told it in the first place.

Oh, Coco!

NewCoco

It’s Friday night, and I’m on my way to a party!  At a loss for what to wear, I stopped by Coco — and much to my surprise, there were new releases!  (Okay, I’m not sure quite how new these releases are because I’m in too many very verbose groups and therefore my IMs do get capped on a daily basis…but they are very new to me.) And just the perfect thing to wear to a weekend ‘do’!

Layla — New from Glam Affair

Layla

I spent some time — and a lot of lindens — at Skin & Shape Expo 2011 yesterday.  My inventory is filled with demos that I haven’t had a chance to sort through yet, but Glam Affair‘s new Layla skin looked so lovely I had to try her on right away. Once I did, well, I just had to have the fatpack!  Layla comes in a variety of different skin tones (I always wear Natural), and includes both light and dark brows and hairbase or no-hairbase option. You also get four different eyebrow shapes, pubic options and a lash alpha.  Best of all, the fatpack includes a ‘clean’ version, and 14 different makeups so your look is appropriate whether you’re playing beach volleyball, or attending a formal ball. And if that weren’t enough, there are 50 additional Layla lipsticks available for purchase. The skin is beautifully shaded and highlighted. And, look at that mouth!!! (I think it’s just asking to be kissed.)

Also new (to me) are the Fashism eyes I’m wearing.  I asked for recommendations from Plurk friends so now have tons of new eyes to try on.  Thanks for all those recommendations, Plurkies!

Aubergine (52 Weeks of Color Challenge — Eggplant)

Aubergine

Color is probably what hooked me on SL to begin with; all the beautiful colors, a world that can make RL look drab by comparison. And every week I scour my inventory — and the shops — to come up with my look for Luna’s color challenge. This week the color is eggplant. And I was surprised to find it so difficult. I’ve got loads of purply things, but one seemed too violet, another too rose, a third too lilac and a fourth too dark. This gorgeous lace top from Whippet & Buck definitely fits the bill though. I’ve got it in ‘antique’ and black as well, but have to say that my favorite is this deep inviting aubergine.

Here’s to the weekend!

Wall

The week has been…a little crazy! But all the more reason to be happy when it’s Friday and you’re in-world and have lovely new things to wear. Two new hairstyles from Truth today! (Here I’m wearing Pia, lovely, messy, casual and pretty.) And a top I picked up on my recent shopping trip to Aoharu; you could wear it with a skirt for a lunch date, or pair it with comfy pants as I did for a relaxed look. In either case, It’s ultra-feminine without being sticky-sweet.

Who are you? (and new from LeeZu!)

LunchDate2

When I first joined SL I created an avatar that looked as much as possible like my RL self. Later I made an alt who was physically everything my adolescent self had wanted to be and wasn’t: a tall busty brunette with emerald eyes and curly locks. Yet somehow she logged on, I felt a disconnect; she just didn’t feel like *me* in the way that my original avatar feels like me. Granted, the original has changed over time; she’s gotten taller and younger, thinner and blonder. I’ve also changed, though not quite in those same ways. But she still feels like me. So much so that, at a restaurant with friends the other day, someone behind me said “Ocean” and I turned around and said “Yes?”

Part of me envies those who fully transform themselves in SL. Fairies and furries, aliens and tinys — we see, and welcome, all kinds here. We know that some of the women we meet are really men and vice versa. It must be amazing to explore those other sides of oneself, and I wonder if it’s timidity or something else that keeps me from doing so. But, whatever path we choose, we’re either learning about our RL selves, or trying to run away from them. I hope I’m one of those who is learning.

STYLING

LeeZu’s new open blouse is amazing: the Arabesque (not shown here) is lovely and colorful; the Araplain, while less colorful is anything but plain. As always, LeeZu’s textures are intricately drawn and the prim attachments are flattering to every avatar. (Yup, I sprang for the fatpack.) I’m wearing it in green for today’s lunch date because it works so well with these great new Purple Moon sunglasses and lovely and practical shoulder bag from Les Petits Details.

Musical Chairs

Musical Chairs

In the game, the last person sitting wins. Clearly, I have no competition!

In an earlier post I talked about the wonderful Diesel Works modeling chair; my one ‘complaint’ was that it only came in red.  As you can see, Rogan Diesel knows what we want.  The upgrade — free to purchasers of the original chair — includes four more colors.  With the multitude of poses in each chair you can use them for photography, or for simply furnishing your home.

Rain, rain, go away

Red Coat1

I put on this gorgeous new coat from Aoharu today, and something about it made me feel like a 40’s pin-up girl, albeit one with a moody, romantic streak. Maybe it was the rain that just kept pouring down all day long. I wanted so much to go out and play, but the rain kept on and kept on. Here I’m waiting for it to stop, and thinking about what I’ll do when it does.
